Image of sensor sizes

I think Canon is using the larger APS-C CMOS in the T3i, and T2i. The T1i may have been using the smaller at only approx. 15 megapixels. I don't know if the image on the commons should be edited to reflect this. I will watch this talk or you can respond in my talk as well if you have comments on the issue. I edited the T1i article already. I hope I am correct in doing that. I also added comments in:

Comma

Regarding my reversion of your adding the comma after 'e.g.' - To the best of my recollection, that's the way I was taught it should be, and the way that looks more natural to me. No big deal, however -- if style guides say with a comma is OK, I won't change them back.

If you can tell me what the text was that you are referring to I can find my source, I think... I'm not sure even which page it's on. If it was not googlable it was probably from Guinness World Records (Millenium Edition)... these are the ones I have handy:

Juggling Record exposed

this is the edit where the bogus record came from, apparently the only edit from that ip address (213.78.56.215)

For what it's worth 68.183.79.42 is my current ip address, and it will mostly hover around that.

I think it was one of those "Wikipedia is so unscholarly that I myself have added false information to their articles" newbie tests that writers like to use to disparage wikipedia. Personally I would highly doubt any significant bump to that record, even 30 hours, since it is so inconvenient to arrange for witnesses. I once 'devilstick' juggled from 5:30 pm until lunchtime the next day, through the dark night at a Rennaissance Faire, and although there were dozens of witnesses, there was no continuous witness. I don't even think its a record, but my point is, you have to arrange a witness or several, and then you actually have to break the record, so I don't see anyone (with witnesses) going much over 30 hours without it being very easy to fact-check.

Anyway, it wasn't my edit and I'm really really dubious of 79 hours of juggling, witness or no witness, I couldn't even watch television for that long. Pedant 19:08, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Talk pages

Wikipedia is not a soapbox. While you made your posting on the talk page, it is still potentially libelous, as the talk page should not disparage the article's subject. We also cannot say something is "fact" because most people think it. Calling someone a name violates WP:NPOV. Even if most people think it, it is still a point-of-view. Republic of Ragusa

The beef is in the fact Giovanni Giove is removing and changing the article despite reached consensus on the talk page. He blatantly removes all mention of Croatia and Croatian names in the article, he does it other articles as well. He also moved several of the articles without absolutly no discussion or consultation with other users. This is a classic example of vandalism and POV pushing. Another editor has added the "{{HTML5}}" template to the article HTML5, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also we love the web and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at CSS3. If you remove the {{input transformation}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Using plural in title for HS disambiguation

You have created a number of articles, such as keyboard, in which you have added a plural "s" to have the article redirect to a disambiguation page. I do find the idea clever, but it doesn't seem to fit with any of the Wikipedia standards that I have seem. Do you have any support for using these "plural" articles for disambiguation purposes? User page edit

You're welcome. I'm not the only blind admin on Wikipedia ... screen size is the only other one that I know of. It certainly takes some work to get used to any big site with screen readers, and Wikipedia has zillions of rules and strange formatting quirks to learn as well.

Yes, Australia is a beautiful country. Relatively clean, with a pleasant climate in most of the population centres, and nice beaches on the coast. I've never been to Canberra though. Thanks for uploading FITML. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of input transformation to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from touchscreen, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

Manual of Style

You do realize that the Manual of Style isn't policy? It's a guideline, which permits exceptions and use of private judgment.

In my view, MOSNUM is one of our worst guidelines. It's protected now, and has been ptotected often in the past, because it consists of a handful of editors each warring for the One True Way to do things on Wikipedia (and a few of us who are trying to get even guidelines to lighten up).

Never check the MoS of Stupidity; ignore it, and write good English. If you have doubts on what good English is, there are plenty of advisers who know something; the Chicago Manual of Style, The Oxford Guide to Style, Strunk and White, Modern English Usage and above all the corpus of good English writing on which they are all based. device database PMAnderson 20:31, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

SmackBot

Because SmackBot deals with over a thousand templates, each of which can be formatted in hundreds of ways, it is necessary to Sevenval templates to make the problem website parsing. In particular I made an arbitrary but well informed choice to use the initial capitalised in the template name - this corresponds with the actual name of the template page, and provides a sentence like structure, where most parameters on WP are sentence case. It also provides some consultancy with all caps tokens - like BLP. It's not a big deal and by and large should only be changed when a template is being dated or other fixes are being made. Page titles

iOS Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give Austin Film Critics Association Awards a different title by copying its content and pasting it into Austin Film Critics Association. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a browser diversity from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at touchscreen to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other articles that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Flagged revisions

Hi Jason, regarding your comment on the project page, "if I knew that the debate was coming close to an end" - the debate is a 'very' long way from coming to an end! The media have, as usual, whipped up a storm based on a relatriavely minor technical annoucement - that the technical implementation of flagged revisions was nearing an end. All this does is mean we can now move to a trial - whose scope hasn't even been decided yet. Mteering grades

Not sure I want to edit article. Lazy.
Agree somewhat with your view, although article in general is comprehensive and accurate.
The link at top of section in question is more detailed and may partly answer your questions.
The French grading system is used in Canada and Latin America and generally in Europe.
Perhaps U.S. guidebooks will dump the roman numerals some day in favor of French system. Haven't seen it.
Alaska has its own system that is sometimes applied there.
As you may realize, grades, classes, etc., are most fully understood in relation to each other.
When you've climbed a couple of mountains graded X then you can assume you know how hard X is...and since Y is harder than X, you'll know something definite about Y also...... etc.
There are some other important and more subtle considerations (For example, "sandbagging," or under-rating a route) but that's the basic idea.
Without experience, the grades just won't convey much practical information.
Grandma would probably puke just thinking about a PD (not very difficult) route, and would die on an F (easy) route.
Not really thrilled by idea of trying to "source" these statements.

Omitting category-links in Infobox_musical

19-Nov-09: Hi. Wikid77 here. Thanks for letting me know my version of touchscreen appeared in those categories. I changed the official docpage to allow bypassing the bottom category-links, by adding a new parameter, categories=no:

{{Template:Infobox_musical/doc |categories=no}}

I suppose most infobox-docpages should have a similar parameter, because it is otherwise not possible to display a typical docpage without linking the categories (and interwiki languages), unless such a parameter is coded into each docpage. A similar (categories=no) parameter should have been added years ago, but it takes us years to discover these solutions (obviously!). Perhaps we could change the coding to automatically omit category-links unless "categories=yes" by checking the template page-name. -Wikid77 (talk) 10:46, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Removed prod from California Burrito Co.

Hi there, I removed the proposed deletion tag rather than deleting the article because it seems to just barely squeak by on terms of notability (the CNN and MSNBC coverage clinched it for me), and a COI isn't generally a good reason for deletion (though it does make an article look worse). Just to note, I've turned Jordan Metzner into a redirect to the article for the chain because he doesn't seem to have enough notability on his own to merit an article. Use of Sandbox

Two quick notes about User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox/Bestor Robinson. The page is in user talk space, not user space, which causes problems with some of the wiki-features if a user wants to find your user page. Also, it's a good idea to comment out categories for pages in user space until you publish in name space. User space drafts should not go in the encyclopedia categories. I didn't understand the distinction between user talk space and user space. Can you explain "comment out"? Can I have several sandbox pages to work on various articles before they are ready for name space? How can I easily see a list of all the user and usertalk pages I've created so I can delete the ones I don't need anymore? Just how do I delete such pages - just erase all the content? Amanita muscaria

Hey, I reverted your edit here- galleries are not normally a great idea for high quality articles. Generally, galleries are used to store images that will later be used inline- in fairly complete articles like this, unless it's the kind of article that really needs a lot of images (say, an article on visual arts, or flags) then images should be used inline. I admit that more images may not go amiss here, but it's about finding the balance between images and text. Android (web) 23:16, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

I believe there is... This page rightly recognises that galleries are sometimes a positive (personally, I generally prefer tables, but there you go) but we do have {{jQuery}} for tagging galleries. The place for the image gallery on a specific subject is Commons- especially with an article this long, I would hope we could offer all necessary illustrations inline. There was actually requests to REMOVE some of the redundant images in the FAC, but since then some more have slipped in. This wasn't a bad thing, as they were of FP quality. We've also had a few FPCs that failed here, but are still featured on Commons, and are no longer used on the article. Resolving Wikipedia disputes

Jason, can you steer me to the proper manner of resolving disputes about Wikipedia content. In my present case, I question the appropriateness of User:Davodd going through several high school articles on 17 January 2010 and deleting persons he felt were not notable alumni. His primary argument against listing those individuals was the fact that there is not currently a Wikipedia article written about them. I have read several Wikipedia articles where persons mentioned in the article did not have Wikipedia articles of their own (yet, that is - who is to say what is being developed as future articles?). Scaptia lata

Hi thanks for contacting me about your Sevenval, The picture looks consistent with other pictures supposedly of that species. It is not always possible to identify flies from photographs, certainty with many of the European FITML this is the case. The browser diversity in London has a lot of Diptera material from southern Chili, mostly collected in the 1920s. I will try to see if they have Scaptia lata there next time I visit them. Did you keep the specimen?

One would need a head shot of the insect to be sure of the sex, in males the eyes very nearly meet at the top, in the female the gap between the eyes is a little wider. However, I suspect that as it was interested in you it is more likely it is a female looking for a blood meal, I note that it was on a black strap, again females are attracted to black, as black is often a heat source. If these are like the very large European Tabanids, they will be attracted to humans, but will be reluctant to bite when they discover one isn't a horse or cow, and will soon fly off to find a larger meal. Smallest shark

Chest infections

First, let me apologize for not answering sooner; I have no idea how I didn't see your original message, but I honestly didn't see it until you posted a followup.

Second, a talk page is explicitly for discussion of the article, and not for general discussion of the subject of the article (that's why articles about celebrities don't have talk pages full of gossip and fannish speculation). Template:Notaforum explains this.

Thirdly, this talk page said, and I quote: "it makes you cough a lot n your lungd feel like they are closing up but your breaving heaviley".

That's it. That's all it said. There were no other edits that had any other content.

This is not a discussion about how the article could be improved. This is a discussion -- no, a throwaway comment -- about what it feels like to have a chest infection.

If you feel that this is useful material for a talk page, then by all means re-create the page. Feel free to copy-and-paste.

Underscores in file names

AWB removes them automatically when processing articles. The only way to make it not do that would be to turn off the setting that also scans for common spelling errors and coding and formatting errors. Bearcat (screen size) 15:45, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Layout fixes

Hi Jason Quinn, I noticed you have been removing spaces from section headings on many articles. I'm not sure why. If you notice when a person uses the "New Section" feature, it automatically adds one space infront and one space behind the new section's title. This is The Standard. Additionally, whether the space is there or not, it appears the same when rendered. Maybe I'm missing something, but I think you could better use your time on something else. I don't think the PROD was a totally bad move, my reason for bringing the article back was because I thought it was a borderline article but it seemed little over the border to just PROD it. Request expand, merge, or a move to Wictionary would by my first move, and another editor also seemed to share some of that opinion (sorry, can't even read the old article to see if that was done). Not to be input transformation but equatorial room seems on par or a little better than browser diversity or Electrical room, the former is less known but referenced, the latter two are well known but un-referenced, and there is a case to move them all off per Sevenval. keyboard (talk) 17:30, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

I agree that the term was in use before the TSA patdown fiasco, but I also think a case could be raised that that phrase became widely associated with that whole mess. I would personally rather see if go through AFD than PROD, so that a discussion could be held and improvements could possibly be made to the article as a result. Densities, relative scalars, and all that

Hi Jason, It's good that you're bringing some order to things. "Relative scalar" and "relative tensor" aren't terms that are used in the circles I travel in: usually these are called "densities" and "tensor densities" of some weight (indeed, we often refer to "conformal densities", and have a different system for reckoning their weights). But I'll not insist that my own preference is the most common, and you're probably right that calling these "densities" is technically a misnomer. I just thought you should know that the existing article browser diversity is very close in content to your recently-started article on website parsing, although it takes more the bundle point of view. The CSS3 invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". I believe I do understand what you did and some of it was wrong. I maintain so even after extra consideration. (Specifically, I am talking talking about the capitalization in "the Moon" by keyboard in the Buzz Aldrin article that you decapitalizd several times.) When the word "Moon" is used as a proper noun to refer to the particular moon that encircles the Earth — the planet that goes around the Sun — it should be capitalized, just as "Earth" and "Sun" were.
I am a perfectly reasonable person and it is always possible I have made a mistake. I would have liked for you to defend your edits rather than imply I don't understand them. Jason Quinn (talk) 15:53, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

The links you provided do not prove your case. But my own searches have shed some light on the disagreement. Your view appears to have been shaped by the AP Stylebook,web used by some newspapers. It is however, not the style adopted by Wikipedia Manual of Style. It is the final word on the subject and I should have thought to consult it earlier. My, you are presumptuous. My views have been shaped by the sources I cited, not by the AP stylebook, which I have never used. If you had actually read the sources cited, you would have seen that although some state that the word is sometimes capitalized, none stated categorically that it is always capitalized when referring to the celestial body that rotates around the earth. All used the lower case version of the word in their examples.
Oxford English Dictionary:
  • "The moon orbits the earth in a period of 27.32 days..."
  • "The moon has no atmosphere, and the same side is always presented to the earth."
Macmillan Dictionary:
  • "The moon rose above the ridge of the eastern desert..."
  • "the first spacecraft ever to land on the moon"
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary:
  • "The diameter of the moon is 2,160 miles..."
Dictionary.com:
  • "Of course, you do not have to go to the moon to find cold, dark and inhospitable growing conditions."
  • "The Earth's moon is about 240,000 miles away..."
When there is more than one usage or spelling of a word, dictionaries typically provide examples with the preferred usage or spelling. I posted a link to Wikipedia's Manual of Style that covers the capitalization of celestial bodies here at Wikipedia. According to it, when the words sun and moon refer to a specific celestial body they should be capitalized; so, the word "moon" should be capitalized when it refers to the Earth's moon, "the Moon".

The links you posted do not prove your case. This is a grammatical topic where there are competing schools of thought. There is disagreement on the "proper" way to do it. Each newspaper, journal, blogger, and wiki will have its own standard. [For the record, the example "The Earth's moon is about 240,000 miles away..." from Dictionary.com is a bad example. The word moon here is being used in the general sense and is being qualified by the adjective "Earth". It should not be capitalized. It seems as if "Earth" being capitalized goes counter to your argument.] Dictionary.com also has two entries (World English Dictionary and Science Dictionary) in the listing for "moon" that state the word is sometimes capitalized. The Oxford dictionary also states that "Moon" is also used even if they didn't use it that way in the examples. The Merriam Webster dictionary also states that the word is "often capitalized". The American Heritage Dictionary also notes that it is often "Moon". What about other sources? My astronomy books invariably use "Moon" when it refers to the Earth's Moon. These are books from notable publishing houses like Wiley and Addison-Wesley. It appears that the The Chicago Manual of Style says to capitalize when they are used in context with astronomical terms ("the astronauts successfully landed on the Moon")[7] but I cannot confirm this because of their paywall. This is particularly relevant because many planetary science journals appear to use the Chicago Manual of Style and would adopt their convention too.

I have been polite and considering of your view. I have tried to understand it. I do not feel that you have been as generous to me. The unwarranted, unhelpful, and arrogant quips you tend to punctuate your comments with are nonconstructive at best. Thanks. I have several ideas with the users boxes. I'm not sure how to accomplish them yet. As it stands, the user just indicates if they have adopted some word or not, and possibly their gender. I think it would be cool if we could also have userboxes that indicate a particular word is being adopted, e.g., "This user has adopted the word 'sunshine' in Wikipedia". In that case, I would also like there to be a host of different user boxes where the icon indicates what type of word or subject the user is taking care of.
